DEFEND … The Enlightenment,
Science and Reason, High Academic
Standards in our public schools, and the
separation of Church and State!
JOIN US ON THE STEPS OF THE
TEXAS CAPITOL IN AUSTIN
Sunday, May 16, 2010 ~ 11:00 AM
————————–
Speak out against proposed radical changes to public school textbooks by the State Board of Education!
————————–
A religious-right faction dominating the Texas Board of Education is trying to distort the content of public school textbooks.  This revisionist history includes downplaying or eliminating mention of Enlightenment thinkers including Thomas Jefferson; more emphasis on religious themes and figures (theocrats like John Calvin!); and even attacks on Darwinian evolution.
These religious extremists wish to turn our public schools into pulpits for sectarian preaching and an authoritarian social and cultural agenda.  Their actions could affect the content of school texts in nearly two-dozen other states as well!  We urge you to join us for a peaceful assembly on the steps of the Texas State Capitol in Austin to protest this outrage, and to express support of teaching solid science, balanced history and facts over sectarian religious dogmatism.  Stop the Texas Textbook Massacre!
Signs and banners will be provided, or bring your own.  Suggested slogans and themes include:
“We Want Jefferson Back!”
“American History for Texans, too!”
“Education, Not Indoctrination”
“Question Authority — Especially When They Don’t Know What They’re talking About!”
WHO’S INVITED: Religious and non-religious secularists who want fairness and accuracy in our public school curriculum!
WHAT: Mass rally on the steps of the Texas Capitol, 201 E. 14th St., Austin, TX.
WHEN: Sunday, May 16, 2010 beginning at 11:00 AM.

About: The Texans for Truthful Textbooks rally is organized to protest the Texas State Board of Education’s recent decision to inject conservative politics and personal agendas into the state’s textbook curriculum by changing the social studies standards in several significant ways. The curriculum standards, originally developed by teachers and scholars, were altered over a period of two board meetings without consulting with the appropriate subject-matter experts and represent a blatant attempt at revisionist history.

Selected Examples:

1. Removed Thomas Jefferson from a World History standard about Enlightenment thinkers who have influenced political revolutions around the world, replacing him with John Calvin, Thomas Aquinas, and William Blackstone.  (1)

2. Rejected a proposed requirement that students learn why the nation’s founders banned government from promoting one religion over others.  (2)

3. Changed standards to suggest that the anti-communism “witch hunts” led by Joseph McCarthy were justified.  (3)

4. Altered standards to present American-style capitalism in a superior light with no balancing critique.  The word “capitalism” was replaced by “free enterprise system” throughout the curriculum.  (4)

5. Added a section on the alleged “Conservative Resurgence of the 1980s and 1990s”, overstating the historical significance of this movement. (5)

6. Changed date references from BCE (Before Common Era) to BC (Before Christ). (6)

Our Coalition: Co-sponsoring organizations are working to make this rally as diverse and culturally representative of Texas as possible. The current sponsors of this rally are mostly from the local and national secular movement, although this is not intended to be a secular event and is not anti-religious. Current co-sponsors include: American Atheists, SECULAR Center, Unitarians of Bell County, Camp Quest Texas, Military Association of Atheist and Freethinkers (CENTEX Chapter), American Humanist Association, Secular Coalition of America, Richard Dawkins Foundation, the Freedom from Religion Foundation, and the Atheist Community of Austin. The Texas Freedom Network has also provided some assistance with the event.

Take Action! We need your help to make this event a success! The Texans for Truthful Textbooks Coalition invites any interested parties to attend the rally and spread the word. We are still looking for co-sponsors, especially from religious organizations. This is an issue that can and should unite us!

We also need additional speakers - our current list of speakers are all either from Texas or have a strong connection to Texas. They include teachers, a school board candidate, the Executive Director of the Texas Libertarians, and others.   We are especially hoping to have someone from the clergy as a speaker, as well as more teachers and some parents of kids who attend public schools.

Notes:

(1)  World History Studies (SBOE amendment).  The proposal to delete Thomas Jefferson’s contribution to the Enlightenment was made by board member Cynthia Dunbar.

(2) Board member Mavis B. Knight introduced a amendment requiring students  study the reason “the founding fathers protected religious freedom in America by barring the government from promoting or disfavoring any particular religion above all others” which was rejected in a party-line vote.  Board member David Bradley was quoted as saying “I reject the notion by the left of a constitutional separation of church and state”.

(3) United States History Studies Since 1877 (SBOE amendment).

(4) Found throughout the social studies curriculum.

(5) United States History Studies Since 1877 (SBOE amendment).

(6) World History Studies (SBOE amendment).

Secular Coalition for America Calls Upon Pentagon to Cancel ‘Christian-Themed’ Event

Nontheist Advocacy Group Also Asks Pentagon to End Relationship with Dobson Group

The Pentagon should respect the constitutional separation of church and state and cancel a planned National Day of Prayer event, particularly in light of its recent labeling as a “Christian-themed event” by an Army spokesman, the Secular Coalition for America said today. The Pentagon should also sever all operational ties to the National Day of Prayer Task Force, a radical right wing organization headed by the wife of Focus on the Family’s James Dobson, and housed in Focus on the Family’s headquarters.

“It is bad enough that the administration is going ahead with an observance of the National Day of Prayer, correctly ruled unconstitutional by the courts only last week. But for the Pentagon to hold an explicitly ‘Christian-themed event’ around the day of prayer is brazenly out of all reasonable bounds, and explicitly exclusionary to U.S. service members of all non-Christian faiths and of no faith,” said Secular Coalition for America Executive Director Sean Faircloth, referring to a characterization of the event by Army spokesman Col. Tom Collins, as reported by the Associated Press yesterday. “This event should be cancelled, and the Department of Defense should apologize to all non-Christians who are being rendered second-class by this ill-advised program.”

Faircloth also called upon the Pentagon’s chaplain’s office to end its working relationship with the National Day of Prayer Task Force, a right-wing, theocratic group headed by Shirley Dobson, wife of Focus on the Family’s James Dobson. “It is difficult to imagine a less wise alliance than one between Pentagon officials and anyone working under the Dobson umbrella. The already-dubious military chaplaincy should end once and for all its connections to Mrs. Dobson’s radical group.”

On Fox News on April 4, Chaplain Terry Brewly asserted that it was “very true” that there is “no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole,” a direct affront to the brave men and women of the military who identify as nontheists. The Secular Coalition for America has advocated strongly for an end to religious proselytizing and coercion in the U.S. military. The group pressed its case for equal rights for nontheist military personnel in its historic meeting with administration officials in February, and its founding director, Lori Lipman Brown, appears in a new documentary on the military chaplaincy, Chaplains Under Fire, premiering at the Newseum in D.C. on April 30.

ATHEISTS HAIL DECISION — NONBELIEVERS CANNOT BE SENTENCED TO FAITH-BASED REHAB PROGRAMS AS PAROLE CONDITION

An Atheist public policy group praised a U.S. District Court Judge in California for defending the constitutional rights of a prison inmate who was compelled to attend religion-based drug and alcohol rehab sessions in order to qualify for parole.

Judge Garland E. Burrell Jr. ruled that California officials erred when they forced 41-year-old Barry A. Hazel Jr. to enroll in Alcoholics Anonymous after serving a one-year sentence for drug possession. Hazel, a computer programmer, demanded that he be given access to an alternative secular program instead, and was mistakenly informed that one was not available. After refusing to participate in the  faith-based 12-step regimen, Mr. Hazel was re-arrested and had to serve another three months in jail.

Dr. Ed Buckner, President of American Atheists, praised the court for its finding in this case. “It is outrageous that any citizen be coerced into attending religious services or programs that ‘push’ religion in any form.”

Buckner noted that just weeks after Mr. Hazel protested the violation of his rights, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation issued an order to all parole agents pointing out that  they “cannot compel” a parolee to participate in any religion-themed program.

Dave Silverman, Vice President and Communications Director for American Atheists said that while Atheists and other non-believers make up a very small percentage of prison populations — by some studies far less than one percent
(see: http://freethoughtpedia.com/wiki/Percentage_of_atheists#Atheists_In_Prison) — “violating someone’s religious liberty and freedom from religion is not some kind of a numbers game.

“There are secular programs for drug and alcohol rehabilitation that are available, and the government has an obligation to respect the rights of any incarcerated individual to refuse religious ‘treatment’.”
