Bill HJR1009 has been introduced in the Arkansas State Assembly. The Bill’s purpose is “AMENDING THE ARKANSAS CONSTITUTION TO REPEAL THE PROHIBITION AGAINST AN ATHEIST HOLDING ANY OFFICE IN THE CIVIL DEPARTMENTS OF THE STATE OF ARKANSAS OR TESTIFYING AS A WITNESS IN ANY COURT.”
The Bill was introduced by Rep. Richard Carroll (G) whose church affiliation (listed on his state legislature member profile page) is Catholic.
The prohibition is unlawful since the 1961 Supreme Court “Torcaso v. Watkins” decision struck down such religious tests and oaths as unconstitutional. It is correct however to banish this provision from the Arkansas State Constitution.

Introduce the most famous Atheist in the world at the world’s best Atheist conference ever: send in an e-mail to our president, Ed Buckner, ebuckner@atheists.org, by March 15th saying that you’ve registered for our convention, you’re a paid-up member of American Atheists, and that you’d like the honor of being the one to introduce Richard Dawkins at the conference. We’ll draw a name at random from among all who enter and notify you by 1st of April. (We’ll help you with the introduction, of course.) Talk about a sure way to get to meet Richard Dawkins!–this is the best guarantee you can have, though of course all our attendees will get to hear him, have him sign books for them, etc.
